Since before the days of Ken Uston, the initiator of team play in the world of blackjack, it has been openly known that blackjack game players are welcome players and card counters are shown the door. To me, Ken Uston was just smart enough to be dangerous but must’ve had an ego the size of the entire town of Las Vegas and I would’ve loved to have known him even though I believe that he alone caused most of the unnecessary heat on the game of blackjack.
Even still, the name Ken Uston speaks volumes in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. And people assume that because Ken and his team of MIT students brought down the wrath and power of smart whiz kids onto Las Vegas, that after they were caught, it just ended. It didn’t. There are still some counters and professional blackjack players in Las Vegas. In fact, there are still a number of them worldwide.
So, why do you think they are able to play in the casinos if they are truly professional players? Simple, they stay well below the radar of the casino meaning they are not flamboyant and deliberate in trying to trigger attention toward themselves or their play. What I have found so amusing about the Ken Uston story is the fact that while the unknowing MIT students were trying desperately to camouflage their team play, Ken was a walking billboard for letting it be known. His presence in the same town was enough to send up red flags, much less in the casinos which had their cashier cages cleaned out because of Uston or one of his teams.
Overall, if you haven’t read Ken Uston’s Million Dollar Blackjack, you should. And if you are even considering an all out attack on the casinos playing blackjack, you must read this book first.
While many people claim that Ken’s team was indeed the last of the professionals, I feel sure that I watched from a distance a number of years ago as a woman sat down at a strip casino and bought in with one thousand and cashed out five thousand within an hour and walked quickly out the door. As she swiftly moved past my baccarat table, she spoke something in Japanese to a gentleman who was seated next to me and he grabbed his chips and shoved them in his pockets as he moved in quickly behind her and they left.
One of the other Baccarat players who was obviously a tourist asked the dealer if she knew them and said that he witnessed the same bizarre behavior across the street the day before. She immediately called a pit boss over, he called upstairs and that was that. Whatever became of it, I don’t know and don’t care. I hope she cleaned house everywhere she went because I love to know that people are winning. However, if she was a card counter, she likely didn’t get very far after this gentleman at my table brought even more unnecessary attention to her.
Casinos have made card counting more difficult but they still haven’t made it impossible for the most beautiful minds with the sharpest of memories. These people are few and far between but they do exist and because they exist, the casinos will always run the risk of having someone walk through their doors with every intention and the ability to bring down the casino’s house. |
